Choosing the right dehumidifier and air purification products for your Port Macquarie home.

Choosing the right dehumidifier and air purification products for your Port Macquarie home.

Posted October 2023

Anyone who lives in Port Macquarie knows how lucky we are to have a home in such a beautiful place. Like many coastal areas, however, it poses a few challenges, especially when it comes to mould growth in our homes and businesses.

There are a few factors living on the coast that create an environment for mould to thrive:

 • High Humidity: The coastal climate results in higher levels of humidity. The excess moisture is a breeding ground for mould spores.
 • Flooding Risks: Certain parts of Port Macquarie might be more prone to flooding, particularly in heavy rain or storm seasons.
 • Variable Temperatures: The fluctuating temperatures in Port Macquarie can also contribute to condensation inside homes, particularly during the transition between seasons.
 • Lack of Ventilation: Traditional coastal home designs or older buildings may not have been built with modern ventilation systems. Lack of proper ventilation can trap moist air inside, contributing to higher indoor humidity levels and consequent mould growth.
 • Recurring Weather Events: With periodic storms and heavy rain events, there might be recurrent water damage that goes unnoticed or untreated. This can lead to hidden pockets of moisture that continue to breed mould long after the weather has cleared.
 • Drainage: Inadequate drainage could cause various moisture problems to your property.

Understanding these challenges can lead to better prevention strategies, such as selecting appropriate building materials, Plumbing and Drainage solutions, utilising proper ventilation systems, employing dehumidifiers, and monitoring for signs of moisture and mould.

Do I need a dehumidifier or air purifier?

A decent dehumidifier may be essential, not only to make your home more comfortable but to also assist in protecting against mould growth, which can upset health or allergy e.g Asthma or skin etc. If your home often feels damp, or you regularly notice condensation on the windows, a dehumidifier might be necessary.

A dehumidifier can also be a really good option if you or a family member suffers from any allergies, asthma or other respiratory issues. An air purifier can help by removing airborne particles including pollen, dust, pet dander, odours, viruses and bacteria. Sometimes air purifiers and dehumidifiers can work together to make a safe healthy environment.

Choosing the right dehumidifier

 • Size of the Area: Choose a dehumidifier that matches the size of the area you want to dehumidify. Larger rooms may require a larger unit.
 • Humidity Level: Consider the existing humidity level in your home. The higher the humidity, the more capacity the dehumidifier should have.
 • Energy Efficiency: Look for energy-efficient models that will do the job without skyrocketing your electricity bill.
 • Additional Features: Some models come with features like automatic shut-off, electric pump out, digital controls, or built-in hygrometers.

Choosing the right air purifier

 • Type of Filters: Different filters target different contaminants. HEPA filters are effective for general airborne particles, while activated carbon filters, Hydroxyl, UVC filter and “Sterionizer’s” can remove odours, bacteria, viruses (Such as Covid19, Influenza A and SARS) and chemicals.
 • Room Size: Just like with dehumidifiers, the size of the room should guide your choice. Ensure the purifier is rated for the area you intend to use it in.
 • Noise Level: Consider the noise level, especially if the purifier will be in a bedroom or other quiet space.
 • Maintenance: Check how often filters need to be replaced and the availability and cost of replacement filters.
